Austonley Brass created strong links with established composers and arrangers. Here are our composers in residence:
Nic Mills was born in Nottingham, England in 1991. When he was two, his family moved to Plymouth in the South West of England. He learned to play the flute at primary school and piano at secondary school. In 2006, while at secondary school, Nic took up composition as part of his GCSE music. He is mostly a self-taught composer with some tuition from his music teacher, Pete Twyman (an ex-royal marine). Nic began playing with the local youth ensembles, which included a wind band, youth orchestra and a big band. Here, he got to write many pieces for the bands to play through and towards his final years at school, some pieces were played at concerts in Plymouth.
In 2008, Nic entered the South West Young Composer of the Year Award (England). This competition consisted of writing a piece in reaction to watching a film about a disastrous flood of a Devon village called Boscastle. He won this competition and with the prize money went on a composition course weekend at the Royal Academy of Music that summer. In 2009, he began to learn to play percussion at a summer music school in Plymouth and carried on when he went to University in 2009. From 2010-2012, Nic played percussion with the Diggle Brass Band under the leadership of the great cornet player Mr James Shepherd. They formed a great collaboration and many of Nic's works were written for or trialled by the band. He graduated from the University of Huddersfield in 2012 with a 2:1 Bachelor of Music (Hons). While studying at the University, Nic was tutored by Prof Liza Lim, Dr Bryn Harrison, Dr Aaron Cassidy and Dr Scott McLaughlin. He is continuing his compositional studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2013 studying for an MA in Composition.
From February 2011 onwards, Nic has been published with Musikverlag Frank, having nine pieces published so far. These pieces have been premiered by the Swiss Army Brass Band, DSWO (wind orchestra) (Beijing) and Leyland Brass Band. Rochdale Youth Band have also premièred his Ru Whenua piece at the Birmingham Symphony Hall and then repeated the performance at Newcastle's The Sage. He has also reached the final at the Ohio Arts Festival and received a premiere of his piece In Memoriam by the Central Ohio Brass Band in 2012. In early 2013, as a celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Harrogate International Youth Festival, Nic has been commissioned to write a piece for the massed bands and orchestras on the finale night. The piece has been named Inspire and was be performed by over 200 musicians on the 3rd April. As part of the Brass For Heroes concert, Nic has been commissioned to write a piece to open the concert called Planets Rising. The world premiere will occur on Saturday 19th October in Huddersfield, UK.
